Just because it’s Friday, here are four glossy images from Tim Burton’s upcoming version of Alice in Wonderland. Beautiful costumes by Colleen Atwood.

Anne Hathaway’s long white dress for the Snow Queen is a suitably dramatic piece. The pearl trim and heavy silk both scream wicked luxury. This is costume design at its most theatrical.

Academy Award Nominations: Oscar the Grouch

It’s Academy Award nomination day so let’s have a look at the line up. We have to warn you though; there are a couple of upsets.

First has to be that Zoe Saldana was not nominated in the Best Actress category. Guess computers and humans and acting and awards do not yet mix. Still, thanks to Saldana’s emotive performance in Avatar, surely now the debate has been properly opened?

The Royal Tenenbaums: Gwyneth Paltrow’s Tennis Dress

Gwyneth Paltrow is an external rather than internal actress, meaning she has a sponge like ability to soak up characterisation through dress, make up and hair. She is, first and foremost, how she looks.

In playing literary prodigy Margot Tenenbaum in The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), Gwyneth adopted a sultry bohemian vibe (apparently based on sixties fashion model Nico) that she was not then remotely known for in real life. Whatever emotional connection she brought to the part, her performance was defined by her clothes.

Costume Designers Guild Nominations: Nein Inglourious

Yes, amazingly, Anna B. Sheppard’s much talked about work on Inglourious Basterds has been overlooked by the Costume Designers Guild (CDG). Though this is not the only surprise announcement…

Marina Draghici has been given the nod for Precious, which is perhaps a shock considering the very ordinary costumes worn by the cast (including queen diva Mariah Carey no less). Yet this is what costume design is all about; sometimes intentionally visible, sometimes intentionally invisible. The Costume Designers Guild, and this is reassuring given their name, can clearly tell the difference.
