Toy Story 3 is going to be wicked. Clothes on Film will happily commit to that declaration on nothing more than a hunch. So let’s get even more hyped by checking out some pics of the characters, principally the one most obsessed by himself and fashion (including Barbie), moulded ‘ladies man’ Ken.
Apparently a proper ‘swinging bachelor’ since 2004, Ken of Toy Story 3 (as voiced by Michael Keaton) is accurately based on ‘Animal Loving Ken’ of the Mattel toy line, circa late 1980s. He wears a light blue, short sleeve leopard print shirt with light green spot flecks; matching cargo shorts with leatherette gold belt, and matching moccasin loafers and neck scarf. The collar up look adds a bit of bad boy attitude.
Ken’s safari style is born out of the sixties, mainly thanks to Yves Saint Laurent’s his and hers couture versions in ’69. The colour, however, the most statement broadcasting blue unimaginable, belongs entirely to eighties’ excess.
Ken is intended, at least in part, to be the villain of the piece, a puppet master from within the Sunnyside Daycare centre where the toys are stranded; Keaton could well walk away with the movie. So, good job, then, there are also plenty of familiar faces and cute-as-a-button new additions to coo over:
Jessie the Yodelling Cowgirl (Joan Cusack), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and Woody (Tom Hanks). Sheriff Woody is taken from fifties TV show ‘Woody’s Roundup’. His cowboy costume remains unaltered throughout the film series.
The old gang packed and ready for their new life at Sunnyside.
Old and new at daycare. The big pink fella is called Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear (Ned Beatty). He is too adorable.
Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear with Buzz and Woody. Check out the fur on Huggin’ Bear – and we all thought Monsters Inc’s Sully looked amazing nine years ago (still does really).
Woody and Chatter Telephone (Teddy Newton). Who owned a chatter telephone? Then you’re old like us.
Below are a selection of character rollout images. They may not be new, but with Toy Story being so darned cool, they will never be old:
‘Frolic your afternoons away on woodland adventures with Mr. Pricklepants! This charming lederhosen-wearing hedgehog is from the Waldfreunde collection of premium imported plush toys. ‘Stretch is a fun-loving under-the-sea octopus friend that shines in glittery purple. ‘Sparks will fly literally during electrifying playtimes with your new robot friend Sparks! This retro-inspired toy has flashing red LED eyes and a blaster cavity that actually spits out real sparks when he is rolled along on his sturdy rubber wheels. Sparks also sports telescoping arms with working pincers, and an elevator action that raises his entire body to new heights. Sparking action completely child-safe. Requires two AA batteries (not included).’
‘Peas-in-a-Pod will quickly become a parents’ favorite on-the-go toy. The soft, plush pod secures the happy peas inside with a durable metal zipper, making it perfect for the car or stroller. The Peas-in-a-Pod plush toy also develops fine motor skills by catering to a child’s natural grab instinct. Pulling the three peas out of the pod will provide repeated enjoyment for infants and toddlers, and soon they’ll learn to put them back in! Machine washable. Not for human consumption.’
‘Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear is a jumbo, extra-soft teddy bear with a pink and white plush body and a velvety purple nose. This lovable bear stands fuzzy heads and shoulders above other teddy bears because he smells like sweet strawberries! With a smile that will light up your child’s face and a belly just asking to be hugged, Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear is sure to become a bedtime necessity. Stain-resistant. Spot clean plush surface with a damp cloth.’
‘Saddle up for fun and let Buttercup lead your child away on a magical adventure! This cuddly unicorn features velvety-soft, snow-colored fur with sparkly gold and pink accents.
